The Living Room

The Living room seeks to re-use an existing brick water tower and convert the structure into a workshop. The space will be designed and equipped to offer people living with dementia and their families the opportunity to work creatively with local artists.

Project Details

We were approached by UK arts charity, Spud, to convert a disused brick water tower into a space that aims to offer a positive, safe and pleasant environment for people to take part in arts activities using a variety of materials and textures. The project will be a source of happiness and enjoyment for those living with dementia.

The proposal is to retain the brick-skin of the water tower and add a lightweight timber structure to the centre, with a viewing deck above. The new structure will be designed specifically to be accessible and feel safe and welcoming for those living with dementia. Careful consideration will be given to sound, colour, textures and features to ensure the space works for a wide range of people and is flexible enough to accommodate a variety of activities.

The project will act as a prototype to test the idea ahead of working towards a mobile unit which can travel the country visiting different communities.
