Whippet Good

Delve Architects have won a competition to design and install a public bench for the London Festival of Architecture 2019.

Selected as one of five benches for the festival, out of almost 100 entries, Delve designed and built our bench in the form of a sleeping dog, named 'Whippet Good'.

Against a backdrop of political uncertainty, we began to discuss different ways of helping people cope with stress and create a bench that could help them stay in the moment. All the while, our furry, four- legged office companion was asleep in the corner, tightly wound into a ball after his morning run.

It hit us that dogs live in the moment, with no worry for what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow.

The sleeping form had a sense of calmness and safety that could have the perfect qualities to soothe the anxious minds of those working in Cheapside.

If you are feeling stressed, always remember to whippet, whippet real good.

The client’s brief was to design a new-build house on the site of a former garage in West London. The narrow site is only five metres wide, while almost forty metres long and is located between a series of terraced gardens on one side and a row of sixteen garages on the other.
