Courtyard House

The client’s brief was to design a new-build house on the site of a former garage in West London. The narrow site is only five metres wide, while almost forty metres long and is located between a series of terraced gardens on one side and a row of sixteen garages on the other.

Courtyard House kitchen - a project by Delve Architects

The planning process was complex, with recent policies restricting any development to a single storey building. In response, the proposal focussed on creating a basement level at the rear of the site to create space for a Master Bedroom suite.

Windows in the the boundary wall were not possible due to privacy issues with the neighbouring terrace houses. In response to this, three courtyards we located through the plan to draw light and air deep into the house.

An open-plan corridor runs the length of the house, and the main living spaces come off this circulation space, so the atmosphere is open, simple and bright.

Courtyard House exterior - a project by Delve Architects

The interior spaces give onto the new courtyards through steel and glass ‘Crittal’ style doors, providing long, internal views. Western red cedar battens clad the courtyard walls and pass inside to clad the small rooms (study, cloakroom, utility), adding a tactile element to the interiors. Granite setts are used in the external courtyards to complement the natural materials.

The project was completed while part of
De Rosee Sa Architects.
